Kiln-Building Workshop: Judy’s Soda Kiln

$360 Purchase required to enroll

A team-oriented, hands-on workshop that leads participants through the design and construction of a 30-cubic foot soda kiln. Over four days of building, participants can learn the fundamentals of kiln design as applied to sprung-arch gas kilns, burner design and function, the purpose and use for each brick type, and bricklaying techniques. Discussions of kiln design and atmospheric firing techniques are included in this rare opportunity to be a part of a kiln build. Participants walk away from this workshop with the design principles and experiential knowledge necessary to build their own kiln, as well as recommendations and recipes for clay bodies, slips, and glazes to use in a soda kiln. Additionally, participants can bring up to ten pieces (roughly 6” x 6” x 6” or smaller) of cone 10 bisqueware to be fired in the inaugural firing; contact Max and/or Judy to confirm clay bodies before bringing your work. Ages 18+ unless pre-arranged with instructor.
